Congratulations! You found out you’re expecting your newest little love and you’re ready to celebrate with an epic babymoon! Of course, one of the first questions you’ll have is can you fly internationally while pregnant.
If you love to travel and explore, I definitely encourage you to instill that love of adventure in your children. There’s no reason to stop traveling once you have babies, but there’s no denying that hopping on a plan without kids in tow leads to a much more easy-breezy vacation. So by all means, use these last few months of just-the-two-of-you to plan the babymoon of your dreams and get in one more dream vacation.
While it’s always best to consult with your doctor, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that for pregnancies without medical complications, air travel up to 36 weeks is generally safe. So for the vast majority, it is safe to fly internationally while pregnant.
You may also want to consider how you’ll receive medical care at your destination should you experience any complications. Make sure you’ll have access to providers and insurance coverage in case of emergency.
A history of miscarriages, complications such as preeclampsia, or a high-risk pregnancy such a multiples, might mean it’s safer to avoid air travel.
If you’re wondering can you fly internationally while pregnant, you’ll also want to review your airline’s policies as most limit travel beyond 36 weeks, while some place earlier restrictions. Some airlines might require documentation from your doctor stating that travel is safe, so you’ll want to make sure you have any paperwork they require prepared and ready.
So, if all looks good, and you’re ready to plan your babymoon, when should you go? The first trimester is often marked by nausea, and the third trimester can start to become uncomfortable as you approach your due date. Your feet and hands might start swelling more often which can be uncomfortable. And let’s face it, the bigger that bump is, the less comfortable an airline seat will be! As shared by WebMD, the second trimester of your pregnancy is often the easiest. Those 3 months, between weeks 13 and 28 would make the perfect window in which to plan a getaway before baby is here!
If you’ve decided to go ahead and plan that dream international babymoon, you might want to pack a few items that will help you travel comfortably. Check out this post with some helpful tips on what to pack.
Consult with your doctor, but if you’re experiencing a healthy pregnancy, travel before 36 weeks is generally safe! Check in with your airline and health insurance provider to see how their policies affect your plans and care, and then have fun making plans!
