Your little one is growing at the speed of light and you know you want to document these days before they’re gone. You’ve found your photographer and coordinated a date, but now you’re worried about how your 2-year old will behave during the session. No need to worry – I’m sharing 5 tips for a successful photo session with your 2-year. A little preparation, and trust in your photographer, and I know your mama heart will be so happy with the photographs you’ll have to cherish for a lifetime.
Rather than seeing the time specifically as a photo session, think of it as a date with your little one. Try to focus on just engaging and interacting with your child and let the expressions and connection happen naturally. By taking away the pressure of smiling and posing, you’ll truly be living these moments, and your photographer will be able to create beautiful art from the authentic connections in front of her.
It’s easy to look at Pinterest and see hundreds of beautiful photographs. But remember, these photographs are collected from hundreds of different sessions. Rather than getting your heart set on a particular pose, let your session be uniquely yours. Instead of trying to recreate an image you’ve seen online, trust your photographer to find the moments that best represent you and your little one.
Give your child permission to play and be themselves, and if there is a meltdown (the infamous 2-year old tantrum), just gently comfort your little one and maintain a soft expression. These tender moments of grace can make the most heartwarming photographs.
While you’re coordinating the wardrobe for your session, consider your child’s preferences. Some little ones feel uncomfortable when wearing something new, or with a texture they don’t enjoy. Let them wear the clothes and shoes in your home. Tell them how handsome or beautiful they look in their outfit and get them excited about wearing them with you for your upcoming date.
If you don’t want it in the photographs, I’d suggest not bringing it along with you at all. Your little one knows what you have in the car or in your bag and may ask for something familiar. Having restricted access can be very frustrating for them, so I find it’s better to leave these things at home. However, if you have a favorite toy that you would love to have documented, bring it along. Just be aware that often, once a toy makes an appearance, it’s there to stay. Two year olds will want to play, of course, so use this as an opportunity to let your photographer document some of the joy and wonder of childhood. Let your little one pick up pebbles, throw sticks, and collect leaves. All too soon this innocent curiosity will give way and you’ll miss those dirty fingers and knees.
While coordinating a photography session does take some planning, it really shouldn’t be a stressful event. Hopefully these tips help you manage some of the challenges so your session is just a fun time together, with beautiful photographs to remember it by!
I would love to help you document your own family’s story. If you would like more information about a session with me, I’d love to invite you to send a little note my way here.
