I met this family just over a year ago when we documented their maternity in the beautiful city of Venice, Italy. I’ve loved getting to see their little boy over social media, but I couldn’t wait to meet him in person. A few months ago we started making plans and put together a beautiful Zermatt, Switzerland family session. I absolutely loved putting the details together and creating a beautiful experience for them, full of real moments and memories.
This was going to be this little guy’s first exposure to snow, so we had to make it special! What a lucky little guy to get to experience the magic of snow for the first time in the Swiss Alps, in the shadow of the Matterhorn!
I wanted to help make this trip an adventure for the family, but also take away all of the stress and planning for them. I rented a sled and we grabbed tickets for the Gornergrat bahn.
As part of any session I organize, there’s a lot of scouting and behind-the-scenes work. It was important to find a location with a beautiful view, but that would also be easily accessible. Through a few scouting trips, I was able to work out the best timing and found the perfect location.
However, with any session in the mountains, you have to have a little bit of luck. The clouds and fog can roll in so quickly and then your gorgeous view turns into an all-white background. With a forecast of heavy fog and low visibility on our session date, we made the decision to postpone our trip into the mountains. It was definitely the right call! We ended up with mostly cloudy skies, yet and almost completely unencumbered view of the Matterhorn! I’m included a few of the film images I created during my scouting trips for you here.
After playing in the snow, we headed back into the village and enjoyed a leisurly tour through the town with a horse and carriage ride. As Zermatt is a car-free village, our horse, Benny, is responsible for delivering mail and packages part of the week. We were lucky to catch him on a day off!
Film images were processed by Rewind Film Lab.
I would love to help you document your own family’s story. If you would like more information about a session with me, I’d love to invite you to send a little note my way here.
