Weaving canals, hundreds of bridges, gondolas in place of cars, there is nowhere quite like Venice. On your babymoon in Venice you’ll be able to take it slow, wandering the labyrinth of the city and drinking in the historic and romantic charm of this well known destination.
If you can, avoid Venice in the summer when the city is heaving with cruise ship passengers and the heat brings a certain smell rising from the canals. Spring and Autumn are great choices when the mild weather makes for easy exploring. Not sure if it’s safe to travel internationally while you’re pregnant? Check out this article that breaks it down!
Gio Gio is a classic B&B in the heart of Venice, decorated with antiques that will leave you feeling like you’re a Venetian during your babymoon in Venice. Boutique hotels are a dime a dozen here in Venice but try the stylish Corte de Gabriela with its incredible breakfast or Hotel Flora, a family run hotel with a magical courtyard. Slightly out of the centre, Cima Rosa’s 5 rooms are quiet, warm and luxurious.
It’s not often one puts ‘get lost’ on their itinerary but, in Venice it really is a part of the experience, whether you plan it or not. Wear comfortable shoes and give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going so you can embrace the tapestry of the city. And of course, plan on taking a relaxing gondola ride when you need a break from walking.
The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, accessible only by boat, offers some of the best views of the city from the top of the bell tower. Book a guided tour which shows off the artisans of the region or try this mosaic workshop with two masters of the art. Buy tickets for a show in Venice’s famed Opera house and let the music and surroundings take your breath away.
Should you want to escape the tourists and take advantage of sun and warm weather during your babymoon in Venice, join the locals at Alberoni Beach, a 30 minute ferry ride from the city.
On the flight over, listen to this tutorial on Venetian food to give some context to the dishes and food of the area. Take notes to keep with you while you’re lost amongst the city’s web so you can pop in to unassuming restaurants. Stop for lunch or dinner at al Covo for a classic Venetian meal focusing on fresh, local ingredients.
Seafood is widespread in Venice but if you feel like you need something different, try La Zucca but make reservations as the 35 seats fill quickly. A babymoon in Venice would not be complete without a scoop of gelato! The best handmade gelato can be found at La Mela Verde which makes a refreshing afternoon snack or a casual dessert on your way home from dinner.
With its history as an important area for trade, Venice has always been known for artisans and craftsmanship so you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to unique and handmade items to bring home with you.
Slip your weary feet into the Venetian slippers you’ll see on the gondoliers and locals from Pied a Terre. Find the Liberia Acqua Alta and peruse this one-of-a-kind bookstore, where bathtubs and boats are stuffed to the brim with books. Perhaps you’ll find something to feature on the baby’s bookshelf. Evem Sas Ricami e Merletti is well known for their hand stitched, embroidered linens and Dromadaire has the most beautifully handmade children’s books. For a classic baby and children’s store, try C’era Una Volta.
When you’ve sufficiently explored the city of canals but you aren’t quite ready to close the book on the babymoon, take the train to Lake Garda, known for castles, ancient ruins, colourful villages and beaches. Relax at the elegant and historic Grand Hotel Fasano. Lounge on the waterfront sunbeds, take an afternoon at the spa and enjoy the peaceful nature of this exclusive hotel. For a more low key escape, book this beautifully decorated apartment in a quiet corner of Lake Garda.
