While I love the cool, soft winter light, or the chance to document a love story in the snow, sometimes the temperatures are just too cold. Finding an indoor venue can be a bit tricky as not many as not many locations allow for indoor photography. But there are some! I’m sharing some of my thoughts and ideas for Washington, DC indoor photo session locations so you have some options to stay indoors!
There are of course some favorites where everyone turns when the weather cools down. The National Gallery of Art has beautiful architecture, a lovely atrium, and of course stunning exhibits. The George Peabody Library and Library of Congress both allow indoor photography if you coordinate with their staff. Conservatories such as the Rawlings Conservatory or Brookside Gardens are options if you want some greenery in your images.
One of my favorite options is Strong Mansion because it allows for both indoor and outdoor photography. If the weather is unbearable, you can stay indoors, but it’s nice to have the option to move outside if the weather allows.
While it’s not climate controlled, the greenhouse at Oatlands can be a nice compromise. It at least blocks the wind and any precipitation, and almost feels like you’re outdoors.
Another option is to plan for a session in my studio. You have access to my client wardrobe and we keep it nice and quiet. These sessions are usually soft and intimate – most mothers choose to keep it just mom and baby.
But of course, dads and partners are always welcome!
My favorite location of all, though, is to document your maternity in your own home. These are such sweet memories – maybe the nursery is unfinished, maybe you just moved into the home. But this is where you spent your time waiting and hoping for baby. These photographs hold such sentimental value – a true gift to your family for generations to come.
I would love to help you document your own family’s story. If you would like more information about a session with me, I’d love to invite you to send a little note my way here.
Did you know my studio wardrobe is available to all of my clients? I know how challenging it can be to find pieces that you love for an ever-changing body. My studio wardrobe is a well-curated collection of boutique and designer dresses for both new and expectant mothers. I also have beautiful options for children up to around age 2. You can read more about my studio wardrobe here and see a gallery of dresses available to you here.
