As your Washigton, DC maternity photographer, I’m often asked for suggestions for locations that are near the city. If you are looking for a quiet evening with an epic backdrop for your session, I always suggest the Capitol Columns at the US National Arboretum. You get the entire park to yourself so it works perfectly for those of you who don’t love putting on a show for the tourists as we work together. I think it makes for the perfect date night to celebrate your pregnancy just a few weeks before you meet your little one!
As with all of my sessions, I was watching the weather forecast hourly. At our scheduled session time, the forecast would alternate between partly sunny and cloudy. I bumped up our meeting time just a bit in case the clouds stuck around. I’m so glad I did! As soon as we arrived, we saw heavy storm clouds start to accumulate. We started the session in the most beautiful pre-storm light – dark, heavy clouds, with sun streaming through.
About 15 minutes in, the lightening and thunder started getting a bit too close and loud and we took a second to chat about a game plan. Just as we did, the first raindrops started to fall. Luckily, we had an umbrella and protected this gorgeous mama as we headed back to our cars. We waited for about 30 minutes as it stormed outside. Though the skies were dark and orange, we were able to salvage the rest of the evening.
These two were such good sports as we did our best slogging through puddles and mud that were left behind. I made sure Dad kept a steady hand on Mom as things had gotten so slippery. It was so sweet to see him take care of her as we finished up their session.
While we may not have had the best weather, I love that these two will have an extra reason to remember this evening together. What an exciting way to document this crazy jouney into parenthood!
I would love to help you document your own family’s story. If you would like more information about a session with me, I’d love to invite you to send a little note my way here.
