As your Washington, DC maternity photographer, I often get asked for a session close to the city, but that doesn’t look like the city. For my more adventurous couples, Great Falls is my favorite no-commute location. Isn’t it amazing that just a 10-minute drive from the nation’s capital, you can find this gorgeous, wild river! The Potomac River flows quickly through this area surrounded by cliffs and boulders, so it might not be a great choice for a family with young children. However, I think it’s perfect for a couple who loves the outdoors and wants to honor the life they’ve built together as they head off on a new adventure.

This couple almost had to call off their session as a thunderstorm moved into the area just as we were supposed to meet. But we waited it out a bit and as soon as it passed, the skies cleared completely! All of the hikers and walkers left with the rain, so we lucked out with this beautiful place all to ourselves!

We first stopped at the Visitor’s Center on the way to the trail.

The trail itself was almost completely empty, but you do have to watch out for the occasional cyclist. They are fast!!

So hard to beat this gorgeous area right along the Potomac River!
